Hi, I'm from Norway,

A little Norwegian christian newspaper printed some cartoons of muslim prophet Mohammed. Have you heard about it in Canada? Norwegians and Danes are being killed in the Middle-East because of it.

I see we're the only one who has 'Commanding Heights' as one of our favorite movies on Blogger. I also see you're a neo-liberal.
Did you then vote for the Conservatives or the Liberals at the election in Canada?

My 'Commanding Heights' DVD was a gift from the leader to the youth party of the Norwegian liberal conservatives.

And since you're a neo-liberal from Canada, i wonder if you Canadian guys prefer The American Democrats instead of Bush and even moderate Republicans too?

Hi Jon,

Nice to hear from you! Yes, we've heard about the cartoon fiasco here in Canada. It's a very terrible situation. I wholeheartedly support the Danish cartoonists, and all the newspapers who have published the cartoons. I do not think that free societies should ban expression because of threats of violence.

The political labels are confusing here in Canada. The Conservative Party is not fiscally conservative, and the liberal party is not really liberal in the classical sense, but more of a centrist party. And then we have the New Democratic Party which is very socialist/communist and the Bloc Quebecois which is a federal party whose sole mandate is to split the country apart. Unfortunately, we don't have a legitimate classical liberal or laissez-faire party in Canada.

I really enjoyed The Commanding Heights, I think it provides a good overview and introduction to the major economic and political events of our time. My copy was a gift also, from a friend who runs The Frontier Centre for Public Policy, a local free-market think tank.

Like most other libertarians, I'm not fond of Bush, the Republicans, or the Democrats. Each party has policies that go against the libertarian philosophy, from the invasion of sovereign nations and the surveillance of it's own citizens to wasting billions of dollars (and millions of lives) on the war on drugs and spending billions subsidizing union rich industries. Unfortunately, as in Canada, there's not much choice in the US.

What is the current ruling party like in Norway?

In Norway, we had an election in September. The social democrats, the socialists/communists, and the farmer populists/city haters party won.
Actually they only got 48% of the votes, and the parties on the right block had over 50%. Unfortunately our system doesn't give a 100% justice. But it’s not as unfair as the USA’s and UK’s election systems.

Our government 2001-2005 was mostly controlled by the "Conservative" party, which I am a member of.

(Not conservative at all 'cos we WANT TO MAKE CHANGES and end the social democratic paper work. We are between the center and the neo-liberalistic right wing, really.)

The Conservatives made us a lot richer. Tax cuts even made the state richer!

The Norwegian Prime Minister (2001-2005) represented the Christian-Conservative party.
He was actually a great Prime Minister!
They didn't have that much power in the government.

The social liberal party didn't have any power at all.
The right wing-populist party supported the centre-right government with all their mandates at the Storting. (Parliament, if you want.)

That government had great politics and great results.
It's sad, but the populists achieved 22% in 2005 and the Conservatives went down from 21 to lousy 14%! - When most of the things in Norway were going up and up and up.
Taxes down for the people - and tax income up for the state. ☺

Now, we got a socialist government with no intentions to make things better, but go back to 2001 and if they get re-elected inn 2009 – then back to 1980, when it was illegal to owe a dish. (Parabola satellite, whatever..)
We also got to pay a little extra to the socialist state when we buy a chocolate instead of when we buy milk.

I don't know when, but if the lefty government continues "lefterizing" instead of "righterizing" (which only have been for the last 4 years) for several ruling periods in a row,
then Norway will become a 100% Karl Marx vision-state.
