Keane-O

So after Manchester United dropped 3 points against lowly Middlesbrough not too long ago Roy Keane fired a barrage of criticism at his teammates. What I found interesting was the reaction from some of the players, like Ruud Van Nistelrooy for example:

"It's good to have people here who say what they feel because they care about the club, and it's important that we keep doing that. With criticism like that, as a player you can either be angry or you can think about it and see whether it is true or not. If you can then take something good out of it, then it can only help us. That's what I try to do."

The reaction is interesting because Keane's criticism came after a single loss (albeit to a very beatable team). Imagine what the criticism would be like after a losing season!

Well I guess it is not OK for anyone to lambaste their teammates in public as shown by Manchester United releasing Keano

Well it wasn't "anyone" it was Roy Keane, and his comments weren't public. After a meeting with the team, the other players and Sir Alex were fine with what he said.

If the team had issues with the stuff Keane says they would have released him years ago. This is far from the first time he's called out his teammates. His release had more to do with the fact that he's 34 and constantly injured.

Now if he had yelled at them all telling them they're B-E-N-C-H-E-D or had e-mailed Real Madrid's manager and told him not to play David Beckham because "he's not a good player" or had said to Gary Neville "you don't help us when you're on the pitch" then it might have been a different story. ;P

All in all, I think it's a good move for both sides. Now he can go finish his career in the Scottish league where it's easier. ;P

People who honestly believe it had more to do with his age and injury are flat wrong!

You do not release a player of his calibre and still have to pay his salary until the end of his contract just because he is 34.

Fact is his relationship with Ferguson has gone downhill, his relationship with Carlos Queiroz has gone downhill, and he used a public forum to lambaste his teammates. That is why he is gone.

Of course they said they were fine with what he said after they met, but what you read in the press isn't always the truth. Even if the players accepted what Keane said to them you know Ferguson didn't and at Old Trafford Ferguson is the main man.

The stuff you are using in quotes is exactly the kind of stuff he was saying... he said things like "I don't know why people think Fletcher is such a good player", etc... difference is he did it in a TV interview that would have been aired to the public. If he said those things out of the public eye it would have been far more acceptable.

My only problem is knowing they had a replacement before cutting him would have been a better move. I guess though he pushed things too far and everyone just had enough of his attitude.

As far as what appears to be references to things that went on with Fusion F.C. there is nothing more to say really. It's all done with and like the situation at Old Trafford it all probably could have been handled better from everyone involved.

Good luck to Keano where ever he ends up and I have to say goodluck to you Jaydee! It's great to hear you are on a team playing soccer because we all know how much you love the sport!

I have to admit I laughed when I read the B-E-N-C-H-E-D part :P

What are you doing still reading my U.S. blog :P

You're right, his relationship with Ferguson had gone downhill and I'm sure Ferguson had a big hand in the ultimate decision. But I think they may have been more lenient with him if he was 18 and scoring goals rather than 34 and injured. His contract was only until the end of this year, and he would have been out of the lineup for most of the year anyway from injury and for rest.

For the record, I've never been a Keane apologizer. I think his tantrum on the Ireland squad was stoopid, for example. And a lot of the stuff he says belongs behind closed doors in the dressing room or between him and management, not on TV. Doing that is like talking behind your teammates backs.

Yeah, a replacement would have been nice, but Smith seems to be growing into Keane's role well so I don't think they'll miss him that much. They could certainly use some more depth at midfield though that's for sure.

Thanks for the luck. It's nice to be able to enjoy soccer again. No coaching, no management, no meetings, no lineups, no arguments, no complaints, etc. Just go out and have fun. Good luck to you all as well. (That's 2 for 1 now because I also sent a good-luck e-mail after I was kicked off the team! :P)

Not just benched, but capital B-E-N-C-H-E-D! ;P (Just like capital K-I-C-K-E-D O-F-F! haha)
